Crossing a great conservation divide.
Many of the Gulf’s biggest conservation challenges from 50 years ago are still its biggest challenges today. Unrelenting coastal development and sea level rise destroying critical wetlands. Illicit commercial fishing and growth of recreational fishing threatening fish stocks. The endless cycle of leaks and spills from the oil and gas industry polluting and devastating bottom habitats. These problems are intractable because they are deeply entangled. Each one crosses different countries, cultures, political systems, regulatory frameworks, and industries.
Solving them will require an unconventional approach. An unconventional organization. So we’re building one — Gulf of Tomorrow.
APPROACH
Designed to go the distance.
Gulf of Tomorrow was founded by a pioneering family in Gulf conservation. We are a collaboration of civic and private sector leaders, public servants, and technical experts working across the U.S., Mexico, and Cuba. We bring a systems approach to longstanding, interconnected problems by understanding the root causes, resolving knowledge gaps, and bridging the divides between science, politics, and cultures, and economic interests. We are also building Gulf of Tomorrow to have the independence, long-term financial resources, and focused mission needed to take on the most daunting challenges in the Gulf.
WHAT’S NEXT
Preparing to embark.
We’re focused on building an organization for the long haul and we’re just getting started. We were formed in January of 2027 with a start-up funding commitment of $5,000,000 from the Harte Charitable Foundation and a significant endowment challenge pledge when fully operational.
Currently, we are looking for our founding CEO. We have retained ThinkingAhead Executive Search to lead our search effort with hopes of bringing our CEO on board by September 2026.
We will devote 2026 to building a multinational leadership team and a lean administrative and finance staff, recruiting members to our board of directors, and pursuing funding partners to join us in shaping the future for the Gulf of Tomorrow.
